The tilted head, hair piled high, gently sloping shoulders and sweetness of expression, recall Modigliani’s loving 1918 portrait of Jeanne Hebuterne below.

 

That this rare sheet should contain two such tender, sensitive yet different drawings; and that each should be so prescient of Modigliani’s future work seems destined to remain a mystery.
